Community Service Projects - Woodland Fair Grounds Shade Structure Project

Woodland Fair Grounds Shade Structure Project

About 40 years ago, the Woodland Noon Rotary Club built the Shade structure and Kitchen Building as a Community Service Project. It was built out of wood and was in need of repair after years of service. The structure was becoming unsafe and in danger of being condemned. Dean Labadie had been thinking about this as a service project for several years and this past year applied for a DSG (district simplified grant) and received $4500 from the district.

That was the start of this service project.  He then solicited the 10 Beer Booth clubs to help with the project and they overwhelmingly approved participation. Our initial idea was to do specific repairs, however, when we started demolition, it became apparent that the repairs were more extensive, so we removed the man structure. Dave Vigliechio took charge as the project foreman. Since then we have revised the structure for greater longevity by adding steel posts.

Particpation has been enthusiastic!! Donations and discounts have helped keep the project feasible. Don Lambert has been influential in locating a great price for the steel and Joe Muller will be coordinating the welding. The steel has arrived and the actual construction is set to begin soon.

April 18th is the projected date for a 10 club social BBQ to celebrate completion of this service project. All Rotarians, family and the public are welcome to attend.  Stay tuned for further updates.  If you would like to help volunteer for the BBQ please email us at info@rotaryclubofdavis.com
